Deloitte is one of Papua New Guinea’s leading professional services firms, providing audit, tax, consulting, and financial advisory services through approximately 150 locally based professionals.
To commemorate World Health Day, Deloitte PNG’s event coordinating team reached out to Mobile Doctors to conduct Health Awareness about Hypertension.
It was a great collaboration on the 6th of April where Deloitte staff in attendance were enriched with evidence-based information about hypertension and simple inexpensive ways, of course at the expense of self-disciple, to overcome hypertension.
The program was conducted at Deloitte’s Port Moresby office.
Key points highlighted were:
[ ] Hypertension is the number one risk factor for death globally according to the 2010 Global Burden of Disease Study.
[ ] Two top dietary risk factors for death globally are consuming too much sodium and not eating enough fruits.
[ ] About 50% of people with hypertension don’t know they have the condition which highlights the need for regular checks.
[ ] Studies including the Intersalt study of 1988, have established the link between high sodium intake and hypertension highlighting the need to keep sodium intake to less than 1500mg per day. And sodium restriction should form an important part of the management of hypertension.
[ ] 2015 PNGIMR study showed a 15.9% prevalence of hypertension in the study populations signifying the change in lifestyle in our country and the emerging burden of lifestyle disease including hypertension.
[ ] A PMGH study published in the PNG Medical Journal in 2017 showed that 86% of all the stroke cases studied had underlying hypertension that was not well controlled.
Mobile Doctors offered FREE wellness screening- blood pressure, body mass index, and random blood sugar checks, for Deloitte staff members.
