World Suicide Prevention Day – Creating Hope Through Action

Suicide is defined as death resulting from self-inflicted harm with the intent to die. A suicide attempt involves self-harm with the intention to end one’s life, but the individual survives. According to the CDC, for every suicide, there are approximately 20 suicide attempts, and many more people have serious thoughts of suicide.

Global Impact:

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 703,000 people die by suicide worldwide each year.

Risk Factors:

  • Certain factors increase the risk of suicide, including social isolation, recent bereavement, poor pain control, feelings of helplessness or hopelessness, recent alcohol abuse, and indicating a wish to die.
  • Males are more likely to die from suicide, often due to the use of more fatal methods, while females are more likely to attempt suicide.

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD):

  • Established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in partnership with the World Health Organization.
  • Observed on September 10th each year to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote well-informed action to prevent suicide.

Theme: “Creating Hope Through Action” (2021-2023):

  • The theme emphasizes the message that there are alternatives to suicide and that there is hope for individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts.
  • It encourages both individuals and communities to take action, no matter how big or small, to support those in need.
  • The theme highlights the significance of prioritizing suicide prevention as a crucial aspect of public health, especially in areas with limited access to mental health services and evidence-based interventions.

Purpose and Goals:

  • Raise awareness about the preventability of suicide.
  • Reduce the stigma associated with mental health and suicide.
  • Encourage governments, organizations, and the public to take proactive steps in suicide prevention.
  • Promote the idea that collective action and support can save lives.

If you suspect someone is struggling, reach out to them. A simple message or conversation can provide much-needed support and show that someone cares!
